Lock Challenge vs Lockee

Both tools do the same basic thing: hide something behind a lock and share a link. The differences that matter are in the details of the free tier, the number of mechanics, whether players need an account, and what happens when a limit is reached.

We do not restate Lockee's pricing or feature list here. It changes, and a stale table on our site would mislead you rather than help you. The right-hand column is what to check on their site, in their words, before you decide.

CriterionLock ChallengeWhat to check on Lockee
Lock formats15, all free, including a real GPS position check, a generated sudoku and a WordleHow many mechanics, and whether any of them verify a physical location
Build before signing upYes. Build, test and preview with no account; the draft stays on your deviceWhether you can reach a working preview without registering
Player accountsNever requiredWhether players are asked to register or install anything
Free tier meteringPlayers and attempts are unlimited; the free tier is bounded by what you build (3 basic locks, single or multi-step, of up to 3 steps each), and a basic lock never expiresWhether the free tier counts players, attempts, experiences or days
What happens at the limitOn the free plan, the limit only stops new creation, and every basic lock stays open to players for good. After a paid plan lapses, the premium locks it styled close to players until you renew it; nothing is deletedWhether links break, content is deleted, or the experience simply stops
Paid optionsTwo ways to pay: the Event Pass, paid once for one event, at $7.90 for 15 days or $9.90 for 30 days, or Pro at $14.90 per month, cancellable at any timeWhether pricing is per event, per seat, per month, or one time
Commercial useIncluded with ProWhether the licence permits paid events and client work
Reveal formatsText, a link or a download, action button, image, audio, YouTube video, sanitised HTML, next clue, or several at onceWhether files, audio and video are supported, and at which tier
LanguagesEnglish, French, Spanish, Catalan and Portuguese, player interface included, in the language the creator picksWhether the player interface is translated, not just the marketing site
Answer securitybcrypt hashes, server-side verification, per-IP rate limiting, noindex player pagesWhether the answer appears anywhere in the page source
ChainsOrdered multi-step trails with per-step briefs, hints and error messagesWhether multi-step routes exist and what they cost
Team featuresNot yet. Studio is announced and deliberately not on sale until it is builtWhether team seats and workspaces exist today or are on a roadmap

Fifteen mechanics, all free, including one that checks where you are

Numeric, directional in four or eight directions, touch pattern, written answer, username and password, colour sequence, musical sequence, switches, ordered switches, 4x4 grid, real GPS position, a generated sudoku and a Wordle. The GPS lock verifies the player's actual coordinates against a target and a radius, which is the one mechanic that cannot be solved from a sofa.

You can build the whole thing before signing up

Choose the lock, set the answer, add the reveal, play it through. Nothing leaves your device until you decide to publish, and the account only exists so the experience can be saved and measured.

The free tier never meters your players

Players and attempts are unlimited on every plan, free included. A per-attempt or per-player cap punishes exactly the moment your puzzle is working; here the free plan is bounded by what you build, not by how many people play it, and a basic lock never expires.

Pay per event, or subscribe

A single birthday or classroom day fits in the free plan: 3 basic locks, single or multi-step, of up to 3 steps each, with unlimited players, every reveal, and no expiry, in the default theme. For one occasion, the Event Pass, paid once, $7.90 for 15 days or $9.90 for 30 days, removes the branding and styles up to 10 locks of up to 10 steps with every theme, animation and premium template. Pro at $14.90 per month lifts the build limits for as long as it is active, and adds the results, the timed mode and commercial use.

When Lock Challenge is the wrong choice

If you need team seats, client workspaces, a custom domain or a live facilitator console today, Lock Challenge is not the right choice yet. Studio will include those, and it is in development rather than on sale.

FAQ

Does Lockee have filmed unlock animations?
Check on Lockee's own site; we have not seen any. Lock Challenge is the only virtual lock tool with filmed unlock animations: 45 filmed objects (a treasure chest, a safe, a vault door, a gift box, a ring case...) fidget while the lock holds and open on video, with sound, when the lock gives way, and the reward appears inside the opened object. They come with the Event Pass and Pro; a basic lock is free and opens plainly.
Is Lock Challenge free?
Yes, with unlimited players, all 15 lock formats, every reveal, and 3 basic locks, single or multi-step, of up to 3 steps each, which never expire, in the default theme and with a Lock Challenge mark on the player page. Personal and educational, non-commercial use.
Can I move an existing experience over?
There is no import. Rebuilding one lock takes about two minutes, and you can build and test it without an account before deciding.
Which one should I pick?
Build a free one on each and give the link to someone who has never seen it. The tool that gets solved without you explaining anything is the right one.
