Five ways to hide a word in a number

A numeric pad is the fastest thing to type on a phone, but a number on its own carries no story. The trick is to make the digits meanthe word: A1Z26 turns RAVEN into 18122514, phone keypad digits turn HELP into 4357, a date turns "the day we met" into 1406. The generator above writes the matching hint so the player knows which rule to apply.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good lock code?
A code players can reach with one good clue, but not on the first guess. Dates work best: the year on a portrait, a due date, the day you met. The person cracking it feels clever rather than locked out.
Number or word?
A number when the meaning is a date or a count, a word when the meaning is a place, a nickname or an answer to a question. Numeric locks are faster to enter on a phone, which matters when a group opens the same link at once. Word locks carry more meaning.
What is A1Z26?
A cipher where each letter becomes its position in the alphabet: A is 1, B is 2, Z is 26. It lets a numeric lock carry a word, and it is one of the first ciphers escape room players recognise.
What are phone keypad digits?
The letters printed on an old phone keypad: ABC on 2, DEF on 3, up to WXYZ on 9. "HELP" becomes 4357. It is a satisfying clue for a numeric lock because most people know the mapping once they see one key.
How do I turn a code into something I can share?

Is my date or word stored?
No. The codes are generated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server until you publish a lock from the builder, and even then the answer is stored as a hash.
